APBT to begin setting up CDMA 2000 EV-DO network in 2010

Asia Pacific Broadband Telecom (APBT), Taiwan's only CDMA 2000 operator, plans to upgrade its infrastructure to 3.5G through establishing a CDMA 2000 EV-DO network beginning 2010, according to the company.

APBT has drawn up plans for setting up CDMA 2000 EV-DO infrastructure in three to five years. The plans and budget are still subject to approval by the company's board of directors, APBT indicated.

APBT plans to begin offering smartphones in the third quarter of 2009 in cooperation with handset vendors including High Tech Computer (HTC), and will use its existing CDMA 2000 network to provide data communication services, APBT noted.

APBT reach two million subscribers earlier in May 2009 and expects the number to increase to 2.3 million at the end of 2009, the company indicated. With a capex budget of NT$1.5 billion (US$45 million) for 2009, APBT recently procured equipment worth NT$600 million from Nortel Networks and China-based Huawei Technologies, the company pointed out. In addition, APBT plans to procure 700,000 handsets worth NT$2.5 billion in 2009, the company noted.
