China Mobile chairman confirms scheduled visit to Taiwan

China Mobile chairman Wang Jiangzhou has confirmed a visit to Taiwan in the second half of August. Wang is scheduled to attend a seminar on the future development of telecom industry sponsored by Taiwan telecom service providers.

Jan Eric Nilsson, vice chairman and president of Taiwan-based Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET), said that FET will seek an opportunity to meet Wang during his stay in Taiwan because China Mobile will be one of the most important strategic partners for FET in the next three years.

FET and China Mobile have signed a strategic alliance agreement under which the China carrier will take a 12% stake in FET, and the two companies also have agreed to set up a joint venture in China to facilitate the development of TD-SCDMA-enabled applications by Taiwan hardware and software vendors.

While China Mobile's planned investment in FET might not be able to realize soon under the current Taiwan government policy that prohibits Chinese investments in Taiwan-based telecom carriers, Nilsson revealed that the planned joint venture will be established in the first half of 2010.
