MediaTek expected to obtain licenses from Qualcomm, Microsoft in 3Q09

MediaTek is expected to sign licensing agreements with Qualcomm and Microsoft for WCDMA applications and smartphones respectively by the end of third-quarter 2009, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.

MediaTek's WCDMA handset chips and smartphone platforms are expected to begin shipments in the fourth quarter, the report noted. The report further cited market watchers saying that MediaTek's handset chip shipments will maintain a 20% on-year growth through 2012.
