Sony Ericsson puts developers at the centre of user experience with XPERIA™ X2

XPERIA™ X2 is the latest phone in Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA™ range. It will be one of the first phones to market based on Windows Mobile® 6.5 Professional and features an eye-catching user interface that includes a new range of interactive Panels on the home screen, offering business, fun and communication features. Users can easily select and download Panels from PlayNow™ arena, Sony Ericsson’s one-stop content store which also offers music, movies, themes and a whole lot more.

New Panelizer tools in the Sony Ericsson Panel SDK for X2 make it easy for developers to maximize investment in existing applications. In just a few clicks, existing content including native apps, Flash, Java ME and Project Capuchin can be turned in to a Panel. It’s also simple to create HTML panels.

The Panelizer SDK also enables developers to create native applications and make use of powerful 3D graphics because the XPERIA™ X2 features support for OpenGL® ES 1.1. XPERIA™ X2 is also equipped with a Java Runtime that makes Java/Capuchin applications run as well integrated as native applications.

“Putting developers’ applications directly in front of consumers is a crucial focus for us,” says Christopher David, Head of Developer and Partner Engagement at Sony Ericsson. “We created the Panel SDK to streamline the development process, minimising the time it takes to get applications directly to the consumer and providing developers with additional revenue opportunities.”

From mid-September 2009, developers will be able to submit Panels to PlayNow™ arena, which operates in 18 countries and offers a 70% net revenue share. From submission to sale takes less than 30 days for accepted Panels, and verification/signing can be delayed until after Sony Ericsson has reviewed the application.

The new XPERIA™ X2 features a 3.2 inch 480 x 800 (WVGA) touch-screen with 65,536 colors, an 8.1 Megapixel camera with 16x digital zoom, full QWERTY keyboard, HSPA (7.2 Mbps downlink / 2 Mbps uplink), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth™ 2.1 with extensive profile support, microSD™ and microSDHC memory card support.

Designed for those who always need to be connected, whether it’s for business or personal life, the XPERIA™ X2 blurs the boundary between work and play.

Users can instantly synchronize their mail and calendar and open and edit Microsoft® Office Mobile documents quickly and efficiently to stay connected with colleagues wherever they are. The unique SlideView feature provides quick access to frequently used phone activities including contacts, messages, media and the Panel Manager, SlideView provides an overview of missed incoming activity, notifying the user of any missed calls, e-mails and text messages so users don’t overlook an important contact.

The high resolution touch screen and 8.1 megapixel camera provide excellent multimedia capability. By personalizing the Panels, users can access Facebook™ to upload their party or holiday images and they can chat with friends across the world via Skype. Whether it is music, photography, email, video or gaming the XPERIA™ X2 has it all.

XPERIA™ X2 will be available in selected markets from early Q4 2009 in the colors Elegant Black and Modern Silver.
