Japanese DOCOMO operator runs a network of sensors that control the environment

Japanese operator NTT DOCOMO announced the beginning of December 21 this year, the experimental operation of the network of sensors monitoring the environment, including those that measure the amount of pollen in the air, carbon dioxide (CO2), ultraviolet solar radiation and other atmospheric phenomena that affect human health and everyday life.

DOCOMO will provide data to companies for use in various commercial applications such as weather and other information services, as well as for pharmaceutical companies, medical institutions and municipal authorities.

The network of environmental sensors will use the existing mobile network operator, which covers almost the whole of Japan with the urban and rural areas.

At the beginning of trial operation, DOCOMO will install its sensors at 300 sites in the metropolitan prefecture - Kanto, as well as the adjacent prefecture of Shizuoka. Until the end of the next financial year (March 2011) the operator intends to increase the number of seats with sensors up to 2500 across the country, bringing in consequence the number to 9000.
