Taiwan IC design houses see strong demand from smartphone sector in 3Q10

Taiwan-based handset design houses, including Elan Microelectronics, Egalax-empia Technology (EETI), Capella Microsystems and Prolific Technology, are all expecting strong demand from the smartphone sector in the third quarter of 2010.

Touch controller IC vendor Elan Microelectronics' July and August revenues are expected to increase 5% and 10% on month, respectively, on strong demand from HTC, Fujitsu, notebook and game console makers, according to industry sources.

Touch panel controller maker EETI has seen strong demand from white-box handset makers in China since the beginning of the second quarter and orders are projected to continue to increase. Third-quarter revenues should rise at least 10% sequentially, the sources estimated.

Capella, which specializes in analog and analog/digital mixed signal ICs for optical systems, is expected to see its revenues climb higher in the third quarter after posting a 40% sequential growth in the second quarter due to increasing shipments of its ambient-light sensors for smartphones, the sources indicated.

USB controller designer Prolific is also expected to see its revenues continue rising from July to September buoyed by increasing penetration of its accelerometers (g-sensors) in the smartphone and high-end feature handset sectors, the sources revealed.
