Unimicron, Unitech ramping production for HDI boards

PCB makers Unimicron Technology and Unitech Printed Circuit Board are in the process of expanding their production capacity for HDI boards, to mainly satisfy growing demand for smartphones, according to the companies.

Unimicron is set to ramp up its monthly capacity of HDI boards to 2.05 million square feet at the end of 2010 from the current 1.5 million square feet, said the company.

In addition to the smartphone sector, the company also expects the penetration rate of HDI boards in tablet PCs will expand significantly in the next 2-3 years, according to Unimicron chairman Tze-chang Tzeng.

Meanwhile, Unitech plans to build up a new plant in Yilan, northeastern Taiwan, to ramp up its capacity by 25-30%, said the company, noting that the new facilities will come online in early 2011.

Unitech now also expects its handset PCB shipments to stage a 20% sequential growth in the third quarter of 2010, an upward revision from its previous estimate of flat-to-modest growth, according to company president Hsu Cheng-hung. Smartphone customers have recently turned more active in placing orders, Hsu explained.

Sales of HDI boards accounted for 90% of Unitech's total sales at the end of the second quarter, with the smartphone sector contributing 60% of the sales from HDI boards, the company noted.
