Microsoft's mobile OS surpassed BlackBerry in smartphone shipments and market share during the first quarter of 2013, says IDC.
Microsoft's Windows Phone grabbed third place from BlackBerry in global smartphone shipments in the first quarter, market researcher IDC said Thursday.
Windows Phone accounted for shipments of 7 million smartphones, earning itself a market share of 3.2 percent last quarter. That was a gain from the first quarter of 2012, which saw shipments of 3 million and a market share of 2 percent.

Over the same period, BlackBerry saw its fortunes fall. Last quarter, shipments fell to 6.3 million from 9.7 million in the year-ago quarter, while BlackBerry's market share dropped to 2.9 percent from 6.4 percent.
Windows Phone posted the largest gain among all operating systems, a feat largely due to Nokia, IDC said in its report. The Finnish phone maker was responsible for 70 percent of all Windows Phone shipments last quarter. Since partnering with Microsoft, Nokia has shipped a total of 20.3 million Windows Phone handsets. Other vendors also offer Windows Phone devices but mostly as an alternative to their mainstay Android phones.
"Windows Phone claiming the third spot is a first and helps validate the direction taken by Microsoft and key partner Nokia," IDC analyst Kevin Restivo said in a statement. "Given the relatively low volume generated, the Windows Phone camp will need to show further gains to solidify its status as an alterative to Android or iOS."
Despite the boost for Windows Phone, Google's Android and Apple iOS operating systems still completely dominate the smartphone landscape.
Android phones saw shipments of 162.1 million last quarter, up from 90.3 million for the prior year's quarter. Market share climbed to 75 percent from 59.1 percent.
Apple shipped 37.4 million iPhones in the first quarter, up from 35.1 million, though its slice of the market dropped to 17.3 percent from 23 percent.

"Underpinning the worldwide smartphone market is the constantly shifting operating system landscape," IDC research manager Ramon Llamas said in a statement. "Android and iOS accounted for more than the lion's share of smartphones in the first quarter, but a closer examination of the other platforms reveals turnaround and demand for alternatives. Windows Phone has benefited from Nokia's participation, and BlackBerry's new BB10 devices have already hit a million units shipped in its first quarter of availability."

Android and iOS Combine for 92.3% of All Smartphone Operating System Shipments in the First Quarter While Windows Phone Leapfrogs BlackBerry, According to IDC
Android and iOS, the number one and number two ranked smartphone operating systems (OS) worldwide, combined for 92.3% of all smartphone shipments during the first quarter of 2013 (1Q13) as Windows Phone crept past BlackBerry for 3rd place. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, Android smartphone vendors and Apple shipped a total of 199.5 million units worldwide during 1Q13, up 59.1% from the 125.4 million units shipped during 1Q12.
"Underpinning the worldwide smartphone market is the constantly shifting operating system landscape," noted Ramon Llamas, research manager with IDC's Mobile Phone team.
"Windows Phone claiming the third spot is a first and helps validate the direction taken by Microsoft and key partner Nokia," said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "Given the relatively low volume generated, the Windows Phone camp will need to show further gains to solidify its status as an alterative to Android or iOS."
Smartphone Operating System Highlights
Android remains the leader in the smartphone operating system market, increasing its market share despite the seasonality working against the entire smartphone market in the first quarter. Samsung was once again the clear leader among all Android smartphone vendors, commanding 41.1% market share. Following Samsung was a long list of vendors with single-digit market share, and an even longer list of vendors with market share less than one percent. The intra-Android competition has not stifled companies from keeping Android as the cornerstone of their respective smartphone strategies, but has upped the ante to innovate proprietary experiences.
Apple iOS marked its largest ever first quarter volume on the strength of its iPhone shipment volumes, yet the operating system posted a year-over-year decline in market share and lower year-over-year shipment growth than the overall market. Although demand remains strong worldwide, the iOS experience has remained largely the same since the first iPhone debuted in 2007. That appears ready to change as online rumors and speculation predict a massive overhaul of the user interface when iOS 7 debuts.
Windows Phone posted the largest year-over-year gain among the leading operating systems, more than doubling its size from a year ago. Nokia was largely responsible for driving these volumes higher, accounting for 79.0% of all Windows Phone shipments during the quarter. Since Nokia began shipping Windows Phone devices, the company has shipped a total of 20.3 million units and grown the footprint worldwide to include address multiple market segments. Meanwhile, other vendors continue to offer Windows Phone devices, but mainly as an alternative to their signature Android devices. Still, the gains made by Windows Phone demonstrate both end-user demand and OEM support.
BlackBerry realized double-digit declines from a year ago, but this masks the progress that the company has made since then. In its first quarter of availability, BlackBerry formally introduced and shipped more than a million units running on its new BB10 platform, a significant breakthrough for the company. At the same time, BlackBerry still relied on its BB7 smartphones for the majority of its shipment volume, which, due to their lower prices, were well received within key markets.
Linux saw continued decline in shipment volumes to start off the year, reaching levels not seen since 1Q10. The lower volumes were not completely unexpected, as most vendors have switched to Android and Samsung, Linux's biggest OEM supporter, readies the debut of its first Tizen-powered smartphones for later this year. This is shaping up to be a pivotal year for the open-source operating system, as multiple platforms, including Mozilla, SailFish, Tizen, and Ubuntu are expected to introduce or launch their first smartphones in the coming months.
Symbian recorded the largest year-over-year decline compared to any other operating system. The decline for Symbian-powered smartphones was expected as its primary OEM supporter Nokia has transitioned to Windows Phone and Japanese vendors have moved to Android. Although shipments continue to decline, IDC believes that Symbian shipments could continue into 2014, but in drastically lower volumes.

Shootout: Nokia 808 PureView vs Sony Xperia T
Late this afternoon I was surprised to receive a review sample of the new Sony Xperia T, the new flagship Sony announced during IFA 2012 in Berlin. It’s not so much because I have the PureViewClub, but because of a Dutch smartphone blog I’m running for years now as well. So why not combine the two? :-)

Nokia 808 Pureview comparison
We’ve got a new review of the Nokia 808 PureView for you today, a comparison with other phones, and a few pics taken with the ‘powerhouse’.
The latest in the Nokia 808 PureView series from Fakhre over atSymbian Tweet, the review starts with a bang
‘the best cameraphone currently available in the market’
…and continues in a similar vein as Fakhre covers all aspects in an extremely comprehensive look at the phone. There are unboxing photos, thoughts on the screen, sample photos like this one:
…a look inside the phone, at the technology behind the imaging, and the user interface. Well worth settling in and giving yourself a few minutes to read this one.
Steve Litchfield has posted another of his awesome comparison charts. This time he’s pitched the Nokia 808 PureView against some other leading contenders – the iPhone 5, the Samsung Galaxy III and the Nokia Lumia 920. I’m not going to spoil who wins the battle, but the areas in which the 808 PureView leads it totally dominates.
Finally, a few new pics from the Nokia 808 Pureview that I have seen this week and I have been impressed with.

Pure View Nokia 808 will cost $ 560?
Despite the fact that we already know that the first countries where the sale will appear in the smartphone Nokia 808 Pure View will be Russia and India, the official cost of the device has not yet named. The website of the Russian retailer's "White Wind" some time ago appeared Product Page, which specifies the value of the model at 26 990 rubles, but later this information from access disappeared. Now in the code of one of the Indian shops have found a new reference value for this model. According Androsym, suggested retail price of this unit in India will be 30 000 rupees, equivalent to approximately 560 dollars, 430 euros or less than 17,000 rubles. Given the fact that the code is already present and the store sold a model, it is likely that the official cost of the device. In this case, the reference to 27,000 rubles in "White Wind" looks a little strange, if not to assume that the Nokia fundamentally differently suited to pricing for different countries. Earlier in the network is already available information that, in Italy, Nokia 808 Pure View is available for pre-order at a price of 600 euros (about 24 000 rubles).
Nokia India’s Online Store Reveals (Sorta) Pre-order Price Of The 808 PureView – INR 30,000
Nokia’s gotten everyone excited about the 808 PureView. The 41 MP camera, and the PureView technology, both combined together, have already created some rather stunning images and videos. More on that for another day.
So yeah. Great cameraphone, great marketing, and all has gotten everyone excited about this device, and many are scouring for pricing details. We’ve been excited as well, so yeah. Today we stumbled upon this rather little secret – Nokia India’s online store has priced the 808 PureView at INR 29,999 (or 30,000 as a round figure). That’s about $561 at the current exchange rate.
Oh, and before you say, the online store doesn’t really display the price online. We viewed the ‘Page Source’ in Google’s Chrome browser, and here’s the proof -
If that is something you’d take with a pinch of salt, here’s another proof. It’s the price of the Nokia E5, which is listed at INR 9,999. We viewed the Page’s source, and found out that it was indeed 9,999.
Here’s how you can find out for yourself – go to this page - the 808 PureView page on Nokia’s online store. Right Click -> View Page Source -> Press F3 -> Type productDefaultPrice. Voila.
You can check this out with other phones listed there as well, just in case.

Nokia 808 pureview sample - Glimpses of a Finnish Spring
I have been priviledged to use this magnificient camera phone. It has been a pure joy to shoot pictures and videos with it.
All videos shot using only Nokia 808 and tripod. NO macro lenses or other lenses used.
All video samples in this video are straight from the camera. I have not done any processing to the video but only pasted them together using Sony Vegas video editor. The audio is also separately recorded with Nokia 808 phone. I wanted to switch the original audio tracks because they were so noisy because of the wind.
Additional Info:
Shooting with Nokia 808 when capturing starts the CAF (Continuous AutoFocus) is on but it can be overridden simply by tapping the screen at point where one wants the focus to be. Most of the scenes I tapped the sceen in the beginning of capturing in order to master the focus where I wanted it to be. (Naturally I edited this part away at editor)
I used automatic mode at the scenes where I switched the focus from near to far away or wise versa. Even with automatic mode it is possible to shoot quite close. The flower scenes were shot at macro mode along with the snail clips. At automatic mode it is not possible to focus far away or to infinity.
Someone commented somewhere that it is possible to rule out those focus transitions since it does not look artistic. Well, I wanted to leave them to the video so that people will get right impression who the focus works. Naturally these transitions can be eliminated at video editor.

Nokia Lumia Selling Out, Company 'Working Hard' on Verizon
The Nokia Lumia 900 is winning over AT&T sales people, Nokia's U.S. president Chris Weber said Tuesday, but he wouldn't commit to trying to claim any new territory soon. After all, they're selling Lumias faster than they can make them.
"Demand has been outstripping supply for the first couple of weeks, and we've been working hard to rectify that," he said. "The demand for cyan [phones] is significantly outpacing supply. When you give people something different from a design perspective—colors, etc. —it really stands out, and consumers want that."
Weber's checking in on sales personally, he told PCMag here at the International CTIA Wireless conference. The Nokia executive has spent the past four weekends at AT&T stores, seeing how salespeople approach his product, he said.
"Generally, we're seeing very good support. It's a work in progress," he said.
The Lumia phones are getting good reviews in stores for Nokia's collection of exclusive apps (like ESPN and PGA Tour), the colorful design, and the phones' value for money, he said. (Check out our companion story for more on Nokia's new exclusive apps.)
Still, Windows Phone isn't growing very quickly. Even though the OS got great satisfaction ratings in PCMag's Readers' Choice Awards, Windows Phone notched just 1.7 percent of the U.S. smartphone market in the latest Nielsen stats, behind even 4.1 percent share held by the now-obsolete Windows Mobile 6.
Adding carriers—especially CDMA carriers like Verizon Wireless—could help Nokia's growth. Weber said he's working on that.
"We're not making any announcements, but we understand the importance of Verizon and we're working hard to make that a reality," he said.
Nokia's future is also clouded by the mysteries surrounding the upcoming Windows Phone 8, also known as "Apollo." While carriers such as Sprint and Cricket expressed enthusiasm over Windows Phone 8 at this show, Microsoft and Nokia won't admit it exists—which means they can't tell Lumia owners whether they'll be able to upgrade their phones. WP8 has been predicted to come out this September or October.
"Both Nokia and Microsoft understand the importance for consumers to keep their devices fresh and updated. Without any announcements being made, we're working to make sure people have fresh and updated experiences on any device they may have," Weber said.
In the meantime, U.S. phone buffs will soon be able to get hold of the PureView 808, Nokia's 41-megapixel camera phone. While the phone won't be picked up by a U.S. carrier, it'll be AT&T-compatible and sold unlocked here, according to Weber.
"We'll figure out a way to make that available in the U.S. in the next couple of months," he said.

Carl Zeiss and Nokia: From the N90 to the PureView 808
It started in the snow: How the Carl Zeiss and Nokia collaboration began
The launch of the Nokia PureView 808 has been the cameraphone equivalent of Neil Armstrong landing on the moon – it’s been a big leap forward. Judging by your reaction, a lot of you think so too.
In February we travelled to Germany to meet the Carl Zeiss team behind some of the great optics that have made Nokia cameras so unique. They told us about the history of a company behind some of the world’s most impressive scientific advances, and showed us how ZEISS lenses are built and tested.
Oliver Schindelbeck has been part of the Carl Zeiss team working with Nokia almost from the very beginning. He reflects on some of the milestones of Carl Zeiss’ collaboration with Nokia, and why he thinks the partnership between the two companies is so strong:
First steps: Nokia N90
“This was the first phone of the collaboration between Carl Zeiss and Nokia, and it was really important. We needed the two megapixel threshold to feel confident that we were bringing impressive image quality.”
“The first contact between Carl Zeiss and Nokia was in 2004. We approached Nokia about the idea of using ZEISS optics in mobile phone cameras, and we found we were on the same page. We got into a discussion with Nokia very easily – and both companies had a common understanding of the benefits of a partnership. It took less than three months to get from that discussion to signing contracts.”
“It all started in the snow. The first meeting of the management teams was in January 2005. There were five people from Carl Zeiss and five people from Nokia. They met in Finland, and went up to a guesthouse in snow-covered Lapland.”
“The atmosphere was very open and trusting from the start. It was a good fit between people, as well as between companies.”
“I joined the team in May 2005, and preparations for the N90 were up and running already. The N90 was very challenging for us, because we joined the process at a late point.”
“It was the first phone we’d worked on at Carl Zeiss and we had a lot to learn. Obviously Carl Zeiss is known for working with large, high quality, lenses made from glass. The plastic used in small, camera phone lenses, was a new material for us.”
“We already had experience in working with miniature lenses. In fact, Carl Zeiss built a camera lens that small as far back as the 1920s, made out of glass. And, of course, Carl Zeiss is a world leader in producing microscopy lenses, which are even smaller than camera lenses.”
“What was really new for us was the scale and volume of production that was necessary for Nokia. We produce some of our bigger lenses in the hundreds, maybe in the thousands. Working with Nokia we were looking at producing millions of lenses.”
Leap forward: Nokia N95
“Working on the N95 was a big milestone. We moved up to a five megapixel camera. When we started the collaboration two megapixels had seemed challenging, so moving up to five was amazing. At that time it was by far the best camera phone on the market. Even now it’s still an excellent camera.”
“What really impressed me personally was that this was truly the first smartphone. The N95 could do everything you wanted from a smartphone – it deserves that title.”
Dreamphone: Nokia N8
“For many of us who worked on the Nokia N8 at Carl Zeiss this is still the number one of all time. It was a big, big step forward.”
“When you start to step up to challenges like making a 12 megapixel camera you really need solid relationships in place with your partners and suppliers.”
“For us it wasn’t an issue of whether we could make 12 megapixels, but whether we could make a high quality lens constrained by the physical restrictions of a mobile phone. The size and thinness of a mobile phone is always a big hurdle for us.”
“The size of the camera module is a red line for us. The camera module in the N90 lens was 13mm for a two megapixel resolution. Now camera lenses are less than half that size, and the resolution is four times higher.”
“We elaborated a roadmap with Nokia, and began to work on the lens for the N8 before the sensor had been developed. Essentially, you are working on your part of the collaboration, trusting that your suppliers and partners are working to create their part of the project – and that the capabilities will finally complement each other.”
The Nokia PureView 808
“Like the N8, we started work on the lens for the Nokia PureView 808 a year before the prototype of the sensor was ready.”
“Sensor development is important because you have to allow higher angles for the light rays. More advanced technology means that optics have to be elevated. Higher resolution requires even greater precision in the production process.”
“Until this phone development had been in logical steps. 2,3, 5, 8 – even 12 megapixels. The scale of the Nokia PureView 808 was totally unbelievable. 41 megapixels. It was crazy! It took us some time at ZEISS to figure out if this was possible.”
“People asked us, what’s the benefit of 41 megapixels? For us the potential of this concept is not 41 mega pixels. It was that you get full five megapixel images, even at full zoom. And the technology for pixel oversampling means that there is amazing clarity, with no noise.”
“A few days ago we took three identical images using a Nokia PureView 808, a mid range system camera , and a high end SLR camera. Then we printed them at A4 size. We asked people to choose which image had been taken with which lens. Even the professionals got it wrong – the Nokia PureView 808 really is that good.”
“When we started the collaboration between Nokia and Carl Zeiss seven years ago no one would have believed the products we’ve produced, and the journey it’s taken us on. From 2 megapixels of high quality imaging to the PureView 808. The excitement surrounding the PureView has been unbelievable, but wait until you see the products we’ve got planned for the future.”

Nokia 801T: a new smartphone based on Symbian ^ 3
By Nokia, apparently, is not going to completely throw edition Symbian-smartphones, despite the transition to Windows Phone as a core platform. At the very least, the site of the Center Certification Telecom Equipment China (TENAA) page appears Nokia 801T device based on Symbian ^ 3. Apparently, we are talking about the recent versions of Anna or Belle. Smartphone refers to the average level: some of its characteristics worthy, but the role of the flagship model is still not pulling.
