While Android and iOS remain the top contenders, Windows steadily moves upwards
As iOS and Android continue to battle it out for top selling smartphone OS, Windows has grown steadily over the past year and is now at its highest sales share figure so far.
While accounting for just 5.6% of smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2013, Windows gained 1.9% compared to the same period last year, according to US smartphone sales data by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
With nearly half (49.3%) of smartphone sales, Android remains the top selling operating system, but saw only slight growth compared to the same period last year, and is down versus the 3 months ending February 2013 (-1.9%). iOS remains in second place with 43.7% of smartphone sales, down throughout Q1 2013.
Windows strength appears to be the ability to attract first time smartphone buyers, upgrading from a featurephone. Of those who changed their phone over the last year to a Windows smartphone, 52% had previously owned a featurephone. Comparatively, the majority of iOS and Android new customers were repeat smartphone buyers, with 55% of new iOS customers, and 51% of new Android customers coming from another smartphone. While the differences between these figures are small, with over half of the US market still owning a featurephone, it's likely that many will upgrade over the coming year, which will ultimately contribute to more growth for the Windows brand.
Little movement is seen among the top smartphone carriers in the U.S market. Verizon continues to lead smartphone sales with 37.2% of smartphones sold in the 3 months ending March 2013. AT&T remains in second place at 27.9%, and Sprint in third place with 12.3%. T-Mobile is the only carrier to decline this period, seeing a 3.2% loss versus the same period a year ago, down to 9.5% of smartphones sold.

The AT&T Galaxy S4 has a locked bootloader
Yep, it's confirmed. The AT&T S4 authenticates the recovery and boot images before executing them.
I can't see what AT&T has to possibly gain from this. GSM and LTE aren't magical, tethering is controllable on the server side, and theft-of-services is not possible from the application processor side (or even from the modem side as far as I know). The same device is available on every carrier, so it's not an exclusivity issue either. The modem processor has always been locked, and the casual user doesn't want to mess with that part anyway. Samsung has always been developer-friendly, so I am guessing their hand was forced.
The only outcome I see here is stacks of bricked devices being sent back for warranty replacement due to the ease of causing a permanent boot failure, especially since the device is trivially rootable.
The arms race continues. News flash: MILLIONS of people run custom firmware (and I have the STATS to prove it). This is just a stupid move that will cost you customers and money.
I would not recommend buying this device on AT&T if you want to run CyanogenMod or another custom ROM, or if you are a developer and need to work with or debug the lower layers.

HTC M7 initial U.S. launch partners to include T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T – Verizon launch delayed
For months, we’ve been hearing that the upcoming HTC M7 would be the first HTC device to launch on all four major U.S. carriers since the HTC Tilt 2. We’ve heard descriptions of a Sprint branded device and seen evidence to suggest that the M7 would also be heading to Verizon and AT&T.
According to one of our most trusted sources, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint will launch partners for the HTC M7 in the U.S. market. While there are details that show a Verizon variant of the phone is in the works, our source claims that the launch of the Verizon HTC M7 will be delayed. Our source was not able to elaborate on why Verizon is delaying its launch of the M7, but we have a feeling that they may want to put some distance between the M7 and the HTC Droid DNA since the two devices are so closely related.
Based on previous details from a different source, we expect the HTC M7 to go on sale in Europe on March 8th. The roll-out of the HTC M7 on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint will most likely follow a few weeks later. Hopefully, HTC will lay out all of the HTC M7 launch details at the February 19th press event in New York and London.

Amazon.com buyers love the Lumia 900
Amazon.com is a site where you can find just about anything for purchase. One facet that makes Amazon.com such a great e-commerce site are the reviews the community can leave on each product for sale there.
The reviews are typically very well written and reflect the purchasers’ true feelings (good or bad) about a product. We’re happy to see that Amazon.com purchasers of the Nokia Lumia 900 are happy with the phones capabilities and features. It’s fantastic to see that with more than 300 reviews, the Lumia 900 still has a 5-star rating.
Here’s a few samples of what people are saying:
Luis says his bride is really happy with her Lumia 900:
Well, this was not expected. I purchased this phone for the wife but wasn’t sure if she’d like it as she’s not into technology. As of last week, she didn’t want to get on the smartphone wagon as she deemed them too complicated to use. As some reviewers have stated, the OS is so simple that she doesn’t seem to be able to stop playing with it. The biggest benefit for her is that, and I quote:”I don’t have to do anything to see what everyone is doing!, I can just look at the home screen”. Well, good for her. Also, I guess the read-text feature is also a plus as she’s not one to use a blue-tooth device while driving-hence why she never picks up the phone or answer calls until she’s able.
Fast mobile speeds are important, especially to those who like to stream video. Sky Blue, an Amazon reviewer, says:
This phone makes web surfing eminently enjoyable. Video streaming speed is phenomenal — no buffering issue whatsoever! I watched the baseball and news clips without a pause while walking on the street, which is something that does not happen always even with my slow home wifi! These were unthinkable feats with my previous Iphone 4S.
Owners of the Lumia 900 keep saying this phone is the perfect size, as does Bacchus:
The Lumia 900 is absolutely gorgeous and has a huge screen measuring 4.3 inches. The phone feels great in my hand and can be operated easily with just one hand. My HTC Titan with its 4.7 inch screen was a little difficult to use one handed so I really think Nokia hit the sweet spot at 4.3 inches. I do wish the screen sat flush with the bezel like the Lumia 800 because the 900's screen does protrude slightly which isn’t as aesthetically pleasing to me. This is just my opinion and doesn’t impact the functionality of the phone one bit. Overall this phone is gorgeous!
Lastly, Gary Hsu writes the loves how the Lumia 900 integrates with the rest of the technology in his life:
Integration with Windows Live allows me to easily update my calendar, contacts from my desktop and see it everywhere desktop/laptop/phone. I can also sync Lotus Notes from work to GMail and have it seamlessly integrate into the phone’s calendar and mailbox. Work calendar entries can overlay on the same calendar color coded for work versus personal calendar entry. It’s really a great OS.
As for the Lumia 900, it’s fast/very responsive. The screen is bright with great contrast. Try watching Netflix on this phone at 4G LTE speed on this large screen and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
And if you’re still not convinced that the Lumia 900 is a great phone, then you can always ask an independent expert…
Nokia Lumia Selling Out, Company 'Working Hard' on Verizon
The Nokia Lumia 900 is winning over AT&T sales people, Nokia's U.S. president Chris Weber said Tuesday, but he wouldn't commit to trying to claim any new territory soon. After all, they're selling Lumias faster than they can make them.
"Demand has been outstripping supply for the first couple of weeks, and we've been working hard to rectify that," he said. "The demand for cyan [phones] is significantly outpacing supply. When you give people something different from a design perspective—colors, etc. —it really stands out, and consumers want that."
Weber's checking in on sales personally, he told PCMag here at the International CTIA Wireless conference. The Nokia executive has spent the past four weekends at AT&T stores, seeing how salespeople approach his product, he said.
"Generally, we're seeing very good support. It's a work in progress," he said.
The Lumia phones are getting good reviews in stores for Nokia's collection of exclusive apps (like ESPN and PGA Tour), the colorful design, and the phones' value for money, he said. (Check out our companion story for more on Nokia's new exclusive apps.)
Still, Windows Phone isn't growing very quickly. Even though the OS got great satisfaction ratings in PCMag's Readers' Choice Awards, Windows Phone notched just 1.7 percent of the U.S. smartphone market in the latest Nielsen stats, behind even 4.1 percent share held by the now-obsolete Windows Mobile 6.
Adding carriers—especially CDMA carriers like Verizon Wireless—could help Nokia's growth. Weber said he's working on that.
"We're not making any announcements, but we understand the importance of Verizon and we're working hard to make that a reality," he said.
Nokia's future is also clouded by the mysteries surrounding the upcoming Windows Phone 8, also known as "Apollo." While carriers such as Sprint and Cricket expressed enthusiasm over Windows Phone 8 at this show, Microsoft and Nokia won't admit it exists—which means they can't tell Lumia owners whether they'll be able to upgrade their phones. WP8 has been predicted to come out this September or October.
"Both Nokia and Microsoft understand the importance for consumers to keep their devices fresh and updated. Without any announcements being made, we're working to make sure people have fresh and updated experiences on any device they may have," Weber said.
In the meantime, U.S. phone buffs will soon be able to get hold of the PureView 808, Nokia's 41-megapixel camera phone. While the phone won't be picked up by a U.S. carrier, it'll be AT&T-compatible and sold unlocked here, according to Weber.
"We'll figure out a way to make that available in the U.S. in the next couple of months," he said.

The Nokia Lumia 900 is a speed demon with amazing LTE
The Nokia Lumia 900 is a very fast phone, for two good reasons. First of all, the Lumia 900 is super powered from a hardware perspective and Windows Phone is a zippy operating system that simply flows from app to app.
Also, because the Lumia 900 utilizes the uber-fast AT&T LTE network in the United States, Lumia 900 owners don’t have to wait when it comes to accessing their favorite web based applications and services. Whether it’s sending off huge emails with attachments or conducting a video conference from your phone, LTE will make you a happy web surfer.
For those who don’t know the skinny on LTE, the acronym stands for Long Term Evolution. In essence, LTE is the next generation of wireless data networks that will replace or augment existing HSPA networks here in the United States in the AT&T network.
LTE networks offer consumers a huge advantage because LTE delivers amazing network download speeds (capable of up to 75Mbps down) that are even way faster than your home-based broadband connection. In my experience on AT&T’s LTE network in Austin and Indianapolis, I routinely achieve download speeds of 18Mbps and upload speeds of around 5Mbps, which is stellar for a wireless data connection and much faster than I can achieve in a normal 3G network connection.
Apps to maximize LTE
What might consumers utilize LTE for? With such a fast, responsive network, the first app that comes to mind is Tango for video chats. Utilizing the wide angle front facing camera and LTE, video calls on Tango feature high quality video with no latency.
For an alternative to Tango, I utilized the Skype Beta for Windows Phone client to call long-time friend Matt Miller, of ZDNet, and we tested our Lumia 900s to conduct a 5 minute video call. The quality was great!
To further utilize the LTE work, I have been using SkyDrive to work with large files that would regularly be email attachments with my co-workers. No matter whether the file is a huge spreadsheet or a large PDF, downloading and working with the file is easy because of the Lumia 900's huge screen and LTE speeds.
What speeds are you getting?
It’s time to weigh in, dear readers. What speeds are you achieving on your Lumia 900? To test your mobile throughput in your location, I suggest utilizing Bandwidth, a free app available in the Marketplace.
Stocks Nokia Lumia 900 in the U.S. is almost sold out
Nokia has about ten days ago, said that the smartphone Nokia Lumia 900 out of the most sold vehicles in the store Amazon. By itself, this fact does not matter much, as this online store is not a priority network of electronics sales in the U.S.. But now there is some evidence that the model really is successfully sold, at least to the extent in which it was delivered. Website Amazon Wireless announced that the stock of vehicles has been exhausted, a representative of AT & T reserves are exhausted in a blue vehicle chassis. Black option available, but how many of these smartphones have remained in the unknown. Unfortunately, it is unknown how many units Nokia Lumia 900 were delivered from Amazon and AT & T, therefore, to judge how successful the device was not possible. We can only note that the initial shipment was sold out in less than two weeks. According to the representation of Nokia, manufacturing units is the maximum possible rate, and soon the deficit will be compensated. Also, as far as we can judge, the problem with the quality of signal reception apparatus did not affect the pace of sales. It is possible to say what Nokia Lumia 900 operator for AT & T with a two-year contract worth $ 100, but before April 21, also operates a special offer on a loan for $ 100 from the operator that gives this unit at all for free.
