While Android and iOS remain the top contenders, Windows steadily moves upwards

As iOS and Android continue to battle it out for top selling smartphone OS, Windows has grown steadily over the past year and is now at its highest sales share figure so far.

While accounting for just 5.6% of smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2013, Windows gained 1.9% compared to the same period last year, according to US smartphone sales data by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

With nearly half (49.3%) of smartphone sales, Android remains the top selling operating system, but saw only slight growth compared to the same period last year, and is down versus the 3 months ending February 2013 (-1.9%). iOS remains in second place with 43.7% of smartphone sales, down throughout Q1 2013.

Windows strength appears to be the ability to attract first time smartphone buyers, upgrading from a featurephone. Of those who changed their phone over the last year to a Windows smartphone, 52% had previously owned a featurephone. Comparatively, the majority of iOS and Android new customers were repeat smartphone buyers, with 55% of new iOS customers, and 51% of new Android customers coming from another smartphone. While the differences between these figures are small, with over half of the US market still owning a featurephone, it's likely that many will upgrade over the coming year, which will ultimately contribute to more growth for the Windows brand.

Little movement is seen among the top smartphone carriers in the U.S market. Verizon continues to lead smartphone sales with 37.2% of smartphones sold in the 3 months ending March 2013. AT&T remains in second place at 27.9%, and Sprint in third place with 12.3%. T-Mobile is the only carrier to decline this period, seeing a 3.2% loss versus the same period a year ago, down to 9.5% of smartphones sold.

HTC M7 initial U.S. launch partners to include T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T – Verizon launch delayed

For months, we’ve been hearing that the upcoming HTC M7 would be the first HTC device to launch on all four major U.S. carriers since the HTC Tilt 2. We’ve heard descriptions of a Sprint branded device and seen evidence to suggest that the M7 would also be heading to Verizon and AT&T.

According to one of our most trusted sources, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint will launch partners for the HTC M7 in the U.S. market. While there are details that show a Verizon variant of the phone is in the works, our source claims that the launch of the Verizon HTC M7 will be delayed. Our source was not able to elaborate on why Verizon is delaying its launch of the M7, but we have a feeling that they may want to put some distance between the M7 and the HTC Droid DNA since the two devices are so closely related.

Based on previous details from a different source, we expect the HTC M7 to go on sale in Europe on March 8th. The roll-out of the HTC M7 on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint will most likely follow a few weeks later. Hopefully, HTC will lay out all of the HTC M7 launch details at the February 19th press event in New York and London.

Cellcrypt Offers Government-Grade Voice Security for BlackBerry Smartphones on T-Mobile's Network and Wi-Fi Hotspots

Encryption Application Enables Convenient, Cost-effective, and Secure Conversations for Government Agencies and Businesses.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- WES 2010 -- Cellcrypt (www.cellcrypt.com), the leading provider of secure mobile voice calling, announced the availability of its high-strength government-grade encryption application for mobile devices, including BlackBerry® smartphones, on both T-Mobile's secure cellular network and T-Mobile's Wi-Fi® HotSpots across the globe. With encryption accredited to the FIPS 140-2 standard (approved by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology), a government official or traveling executive can use their T-Mobile Wi-Fi-enabled BlackBerry smartphone to make classified or confidential calls and be assured that the content of their call is protected to government-level standards.

According to a recent study conducted by the Ponemon Institute entitled, "Security of Voice Data," it costs U.S. corporations on average $1.3M each time a corporate secret is revealed to unauthorized parties. For more than 60 percent of surveyed organizations, these breaches occur at least once per month.

"Any breach of proprietary enterprise or government information can be incredibly costly," said Simon Bransfield-Garth, CEO at Cellcrypt. "Now, business and government customers using T-Mobile's Wi-Fi-enabled BlackBerry smartphones with Cellcrypt's encryption application can add peace of mind to the cost and convenience benefits of Wi-Fi calling. In addition, Cellcrypt provides added security for calls placed over standard mobile networks."

The Cellcrypt easy-to-use mobile application provides end-to-end voice encryption on smartphones over the entire path between callers. Utilizing an IP data channel, it seamlessly protects and supports both Wi-Fi and 2.5G, 3G and 3.5G cellular networks.

"Across the enterprise, we are seeing as many as 1.6 million calls originated using Wi-Fi calling per month," David Pepe, Divisional Director, Government Sales at T-Mobile. "T-Mobile has put in place several security safeguards – from security algorithms and encryption keys on our Wi-Fi-enabled devices to an IPSec VPN tunnel to secure voice and data traffic between the core network and the device. For those customers desiring additional levels of security, Cellcrypt's government-grade encryption application makes secure calling as easy as placing a normal phone call."

Cellcrypt will be demonstrating its technology at WES 2010, at which it is a Silver Sponsor, in Orlando Fl. between 27-29 April 2010.

T-Mobile expecting “10,000″ more HTC Desire phones next week

The ongoing STOCK CRISIS that's hampering the launch of the HTC Desire in the UK continues, although UK network T-Mobile could be about to save the day - by flooding the country with a fresh batch of the most-wanted smartphone.

According to a poster on the T-Mobile forum today, T-Mobile is expecting another 10k HTC Desires to arrive on Wednesday of next week, which will be used to fulfill the orders of those poor souls still languishing on waiting lists.

T-Mobile will liberate us all! Here's the comment:

"I have just been informed by a T-Mo store manager (chippenham) that they're expecting to get stock in store on Wednesday. 10,000 handsets are on their way from HTC as we speak and should get to the T-Mo central distribution/warehouse a few days before Wednesday, fulfilling phone and online orders before the remainder gets filtered down to the high street stores"

Gervais Pellissier, Deputy CEO and CFO of France Telecom said: “We are delighted to receive the EU clearance on our project to create a joint venture with Deutsche Telekom in the United Kingdom. The new business will have pro forma 2009 revenues of approximately 8.5 billion euros (£7.57 billion) and EBITDA of 1.55 billion euros (£1.38 billion).

The board of the new joint venture company will have balanced representation from Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom. The T-Mobile and Orange UK brands will continue to operate in the UK for at least 18 months after the completion of the transaction.

With a combined customer base of around 29.5 million the new joint venture company will be the number one player in the UK mobile market and it will be in a stronger position to invest in innovative services and to exploit new technologies. It will offer major customer benefits, including expanded network coverage, enhanced network quality for 2G and 3 G services, providing the platform for unparalleled mobile broadband offers as well as better customer proximity through a larger network of own shops and improved customer services.

The American version of HTC HD2 get more memory and Windows Mobile 7?

Despite the fact that the communicator HTC HD2 is already sold in Europe and on Russia's market would benefit U.S. customers who will buy this machine the operator T-Mobile USA, starting in March. The original model has 512 MB of internal flash memory and 448 MB of RAM. At the same time on the official website of the U.S. Office of HTC indicated quite different characteristics: 1 GB of ROM and 576 MB of RAM. This means that the HD2 from T-Mobile will not only be faster than its European counterpart, but also have the opportunity to upgrade the Windows Mobile from version 6.5 to 7.0.

Talks about, will the communicator HTC HD2 only device out on the market today, which will get the operating system Windows Mobile 7, have been going on for quite some time. So, taking into account updated "American" version, this upgrade is very likely, because of their system requirements Windows Mobile 7 - the presence of at least 1 GB of ROM. Currently, however, do not describe what the device will receive the Windows Mobile 7, it has not been presented, and communicator HTS HD2 operator T-Mobile also will come with your version 6.5.

Another advantage of the "American" would be the presence in the sales package 16-gigabyte memory card - in Europe is set only 2 GB.

T-Mobile Plans Android Assault For 2010: LG InTouch Max, HTC Bravo, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Due For Q1 Release

T-Mobile are getting out the big guns in the smartphone battle against the iPhone, with an opening salvo of the Android-powered LG InTouch Max, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 and the HTC ‘Bravo’ in early 2010.

Leading with the promise of unlimited internet for their range of ‘always-on’ devices and profusion of free apps available in the Android market, the network hopes to steal attention (and sales) away from the ever-popular Apple iPhone and give consumers a selection of some cutting edge hardware.

Leading the charge is the LG InTouch Max, a recently announced social networking slider with a plethora of features (which you can read more about here), and will be for sale on the 4th of February.

UPDATE: The InTouch Max has jumped the gun and is available now! Check it out on our GW620 deals page!

The XPERIA X10 – launching as a joint flagship for Sony Ericsson with the Symbian-toting, HD-shooting Sony Ericsson Kurara – will be March’s first heavy hitter with a 4-inch WVGA touch display, 8 megapixel camera and Snapdragon processor.

Sporting a heavily customised interface that merges the best of on- and offline content in a single screen, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 is heavily tipped for success by network and manufacturer alike.

With a reported ad spend in the region of £4 million on the X10, not to mention the issues faced with the Satio, Aino and X2 upon their respective launches, it will have to be.

The final push at the end of the month is the HTC Bravo - a ‘near identical’ device to the Nexus One according to sources – bringing advancements like an optical trackpad for scrolling (getting one over on the Google phone’s old-school trackball), multi-touch for iPhone-esque pinching to zoom and the Sense user interface that we fell in love with on the HTC Hero.

Whilst Bravo may not be the final name for the device, we can confirm that the handset will be equipped with the latest Android build, the same 3.7-inch display and 5 megapixel autofocus camera currently seen on the Nexus One, and be available for free on a £35 per month tariff.

If there is one phone that seems likely to topple Apple’s ivory tower, this one could be it…oh, and check out our sneaky exclusive picture of the HTC Bravo in the flesh, optical trackpad and all!

With a strong handset line-up like that, the network could have a serious chance of turning the heads of those not seduced by the iPhone’s almighty presence, as well as dramatically increasing the meagre 2% share of the market that Android currently represents.

However, the allure will be in the price point as much as anything, but with the X10’s big presence and the Bravo’s killer specs, these could well be the phones to turn the tide for both T-Mobile and Android in the smartphone wars.

Letter to Customers: T-Mobile’s Efforts to Assist with Disaster in Haiti

Dear valued T-Mobile customers:

As the disaster in Haiti continues to weigh so heavily on our hearts and minds, we’re very proud that many of you have chosen to contribute to the relief efforts there, and that T-Mobile and our employees also have been able to facilitate and support your goodwill. We’re pleased to announce that you – our valued T-Mobile customers – to date have donated more than $3 million via text message to support agencies that will provide life-saving services to those impacted by the devastating earthquake and its aftermath. T-Mobile salutes your generosity, and we encourage all of our customers to continue to contribute in ways that best reflect your values and spirit, as the urgent need for humanitarian assistance will only continue to grow.

In addition to your efforts, T-Mobile is focused on providing support in three key areas – assisting in uniting families; restoring wireless service in Haiti; and both donating to, and supporting, fundraising campaigns that also empower you to donate to a worthy cause.

Uniting Families
For our current customers trying to connect with loved ones in Haiti, T-Mobile has enabled phone calls to that country without charges for international long distance through Jan. 31 and retroactive to Jan. 12. This applies to postpaid and prepaid accounts. Customers already in Haiti can roam on T-Mobile’s partner networks (operated locally under the names Voila and Digicel) free-of-charge through the end of the month. In both cases, T-Mobile will remove these charges from customer bills.

Rebuilding
T-Mobile is acting swiftly to help improve cellular communications in Haiti. This week we are working to ship heavy-duty pickup trucks, portable diesel generators and temporary cell sites. All of this equipment will be used to help restore wireless communication infrastructures within Haiti. We are coordinating with various groups to get this equipment to ports, and onto the next Naval relief ships as quickly as possible.

In addition, we are working to provide 10,000 unlocked cell phones and some solar-powered charging accessories. We are also working in coordination with United States Federal relief efforts.

Fundraising
T-Mobile USA and its parent company, Deutsche Telekom, have committed nearly $200,000 to relief efforts in Haiti. T-Mobile USA is donating $50,000 to the American Red Cross’s International Relief Fund. Deutsche Telekom is donating 100,000 Euros (approximately $143,000 USD) to “Aktion Deutschland Hilft“ (Mission Germany Helps).

Also, in cooperation with the Mobile Giving Foundation, T-Mobile has joined other U.S. wireless carriers in providing free fundraising services to charities assisting the earthquake victims. Customers can text their donations to the charity and the donation will appear on the next cell phone bill. T-Mobile is not charging the charities any fees for this service.

T-Mobile is also working to speed up the transfer of donations from our customers on a weekly basis during this time of crisis so that donations get to the organizations providing relief in Haiti as quickly as possible. 100% of donations from our customers is being passed through to the organizations they designate.

T-Mobile and ICD Reveal First Mobile Connected Tablet Made for Busy Families

LAS VEGAS, NV- Consumer Electronics Show (CES) -- Innovative Converged Devices (ICD) and T-Mobile unveiled a new family hub tablet which will be available in the UK later this year. Visitors to CES were given a sneak preview of the first Android-based tablet with multiple mobile connections which will be featured in a new T-Mobile family package.

Exclusive to T-Mobile in the UK, the centrepiece of the family hub is ICD's new Vega, a 15" touchscreen device designed primarily to sit in the kitchen which T-Mobile research identified as the heart of family life. The tablet offers one-touch access to a household calendar so families can organise their busy schedules in one place that everyone can always reach. It can be accessed by the whole family, wherever they are, via the web on a mobile, work computer, home PC or other devices with an Internet connection. The calendar automatically sends SMS text reminders to the family's mobiles, putting an end to scraps of paper and nagging phone calls. And because it comes with a T-Mobile SIM on-board, it's easy to make a quick hands-free call at the touch of a button. The family hub is a full-featured tablet with Wi-Fi web browsing, on-demand TV, access to social networks, video chat and games, as well as an FM radio for the complete kitchen set-up.

The concept is in the final stages of development by T-Mobile UK and ICD and was created following extensive customer research and close collaboration over the past 18 months. The team wanted the most responsive experience available so the ICD Vega tablet is powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 250 mobile web processor to provide uncompromised Internet browsing and full HD 1080p video playback even while the tablet is undocked from its base.

Richard Warmsley, Head of New Proposition Development, T-Mobile, said: "We spoke to over 1,000 families who told us they often found it a hassle to organise a busy family life without nagging or forgotten appointments. They said that something simple and affordable to help with this would be invaluable. We took this as a challenge to do something new with technology that would be relevant to the average person, not just gadget lovers. We're developing a fantastic package to meet exactly these needs -- by creating a family communication network -- using ICD's exciting new Internet and entertainment tablet, with T-Mobile's award-winning network connections at its heart. We look forward to bringing it to market later this year."

"Bringing a high-end, well designed and engineered device to shelves at a mass market price has always been a Holy Grail for the consumer tech industry," said David Hayes, CEO of ICD. "The close collaboration between T-Mobile UK, ICD and NVIDIA has allowed us to work quickly to integrate insights from consumer research directly into a compelling product with supporting services, solutions and content."

T-Mobile Woos Nexus One Users with Super-Fast HSPA+

T-Mobile announced, just at Google debuted the Nexus One “superphone,” that its entire 3G network is now enabled with HSPA 7.2, and that it will be the first U.S. carrier to launch the 3.5G technology HSPA+. The Nexus One is available with T-Mobile service for $179.

As Google officially introduced its Nexus One smartphone on Jan. 5, T-Mobile thought you might like to know that its network is now really fast. And getting faster in 2010.

In a Jan. 5 statement, the carrier announced that it has enable HSPA 7.2 across its entire 3G network—which reaches 200 million Americans—and that it will be the first to launch HSPA+, a 3.5G technology, in the United States.

“While other carriers talk about 4G plans and the promise of compatible devices, T-Mobile will speed ahead with HSPA+ deployments across the bulk of its 3G footprint this year, delivering [three to five times] the speeds of today’s 3G,” T-Mobile wrote in the statement at the kickoff of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

It continued, “And the best thing about the HSPA+ upgrade is that it’s backward compatible, so that the T-Mobile 3G-enabled device being announced this week … it’s getting faster in 2010.”

T-Mobile told eWEEK in November that it launched a trial HSPA+ network in Philadelphia and has seen speeds even faster than those claimed by early 4G providers of WiMax and LTE.

Google is now offering the unlocked Nexus One for $529, or for $179 with a two-year contract with T-Mobile and a $79.99 monthly T-Mobile plan. Introducing the Nexus One, Google clarified that it wasn’t a smartphone, but a superphone.

In the spring, Google will also be offering a Nexus One that’s compatible with Verizon Wireless, as well as with Vodafone in the Europe.
